Obituary

Catherine “Josie” Curry, of Medford, passed away on June 19, 2023, at the age of 94. Josie was born on November 25, 1928, in Boston, MA. She was the cherished daughter of Mary (Ward) Sullivan, and beloved stepdaughter of Francis Sullivan. Raised in Roxbury, Josie had many wonderful memories of her Mission Hill neighborhood, and graduated from Mission High School in 1946.

Josie married William F. Curry on June 3, 1950. Their initial meeting was a blind date! They were blessed with four children: Mary Jo, Kathy, Jan and Ed. She was Nana to 8 wonderful grandchildren, sister of Edward Sullivan, and the late Margaret, Helen and Frances. She is also survived by many nephews and nieces. After many years in Boston, they moved to Medford in 1971 and were married for 49 years until Bill’s passing in 1999. Josie was a dedicated employee, with a strong work ethic. She worked for many years at the New England Baptist Hospital and the Visiting Nurse Association as an Administrative Professional.

Josie was the “Neighborhood Mom”. She would often take her children and their friends to the beach via the MBTA and escorted them to swim at the YMCA on Sunday evenings, after coming home from work. Raising four children, Josie did not have much spare time, but she enjoyed music, and loved to dance. In her teen years she was a staple at the Mission High Friday night dances, where she perfected her Jitterbug skills. At weddings, she was always first on the floor for the Chicken Dance! In her later years, she moved to a senior housing facility in Medford, where she enjoyed the weekly line dances.

Josie was an avid sports fan and loved her Red Sox. She remained loyal during many heartbreaking seasons and was finally rewarded with a World Series Championship in 2004. She was a very loving and caring person but did not think kindly of the dreaded New York Yankees! Josie enjoyed family gatherings and insisted that everyone eat. AND EAT! You would never leave her home hungry, and you always went with leftovers.

Josie was a very generous person who made many, many donations to countless charities. Memorial donations in Josie’s name may be made to the St. Vincent De Paul Society. They help many communities, including Josie’s when she was young. She appreciated and mentioned their support throughout her life. https://ssvpusa.org/donate/

While we are immensely sad to have lost Josie, we will all cherish the many memories we were lucky enough to have with her over the years. We would like to express our sincere thanks to the nurses, staff and hospice group of Blaire House in Tewksbury, who did all that they could to make Josie comfortable until the end.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to visit with Catherine's family on Friday, June 30th from 9 AM to 12 noon at the Dello Russo Funeral Home, 306 Main St., Medford, followed by a celebration of life at 12 noon.
