Doris Elizabeth Sarantopoulos, 74, formerly of Boston and Athol, MA, passed away peacefully on June 20, 2023, surrounded by her family, at the Miriam Boyd Parlin Hospice Residence in Wayland, MA after a courageous four-year battle with pancreatic cancer.
She was born to the late Mary (Rogerson) Hutchins on October 20, 1948 in Boston, MA. Doris graduated from Charlestown High School in 1967. After High School, Doris pursued computer science courses at Bunker Hill Community College and Northeastern University before going to work as an Administrative Assistant for the New England Telephone Company in 1967. Doris retired from the phone company in 1994 when her first grandchild was born. Doris loved caring for and being “Nana” to her three grandchildren, Caitlin Love, David Love and Emma Sarantopoulos. Doris loved children, especially her little friend Aurora.
Doris married the late John “Sam” Sarantopoulos in 1970. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, James and Elizabeth Sarantopoulos and their daughter, Emma of Framingham, MA. Her son-in-law, Joseph Love and his children Caitlin and David Love of Athol, MA, her brothers Fred Hutchins and Paul Hutchins of Boston, MA and her sister and best friend, Susan Devine of Boston, MA. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews and her favorite beagle, Chuck. Doris was predeceased by her husband, John Sarantopoulos in 1982 and her beloved daughter, Mary (Sarantopoulos) Love in 2015. She is also predeceased by her brothers, Donald Rogerson, Ralph Hutchins, Eddie Hutchins, Kenny Hutchins and her sister Lorraine (Hutchins) Jerrier.
Doris had many hobbies, but especially loved sewing, crocheting, painting and doing puzzles. During the pandemic, Doris enjoyed sewing masks and scrub caps for nurses at Boston Medical Center. She also loved crafting items for her grandchildren and family members. Doris loved the Maine coast, especially the Wells and Kennebunkport areas. Doris traveled to Alaska on a cruise in 2002. She fondly told stories of walking on glaciers, panning for gold and riding in a helicopter over the Alaskan landscape.
Doris resided at the Shillman House in Framingham, MA for the last three years of her life. She loved the community and staff and enjoyed playing bingo, doing puzzles, painting and socializing with all of her friends.
Doris was immensely proud of her family, and leaves behind nothing but beautiful memories. Doris loved butterflies, especially the yellow ones, and is now free to fly among them.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial funeral mass on Saturday, August 12, 2023 at 11am at Edwards Church in Framingham, MA. A Celebration of Life will be held following the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Doris can be made to the Miriam Boyd Parlin Hospice Residence at Good Shepard Community Care.
