We are sad to announce that John “Richard” Gregory of Marshfield, Massachusetts passed away at the age of 83 on June 9, 2023. He spent his final moments in comfort and peace with his family by his side. Richard was a devoted husband, a cherished father and grandfather, and a dear friend.
Richard will long be remembered by his beloved wife Diana Gregory, his children Mark Gregory and Michelle Joyce, his son-in-law Brian Joyce, his seven grandchildren, Alix Gregory, Danica Gregory, Mark Gregory, Joseph Joyce, Thomas Joyce, James Joyce and Sofia Joyce and many extended family members and friends.
Born on September 11, 1939 and raised in Newton, Richard was the youngest of five children and son of the late Thomas and Hope Gregory. Richard attended Newton High School, where he met the love of his life, Diana. Their high school romance evolved into a lifelong partnership characterized by love, laughter, and unwavering support which lasted almost 70 years.
After high school, Richard pursued higher education and earned degrees from the Stockbridge School of Agriculture at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and Babson College. He went on to find success in the farming and seafood industries, where he farmed over 500 acres with his father in Virginia, before coming back to Massachusetts and starting a small wholesale lobster company which grew into a business that shipped seafood products worldwide. After retiring, Richard enjoyed his final years at Widow’s Walk Golf Course where he spent his days working and golfing with the many friends he made there. Along with golfing, Richard enjoyed long walks and exercise, a good book, and spending time with his family.
Though Richard may no longer be physically present, the memories he shared will live on in the hearts of his family and friends. His kindness and generosity touched many during his life, and he will be remembered fondly by all who had the privilege of knowing him. A celebration of Richard’s life will be held at a later date.
