Carmelo Arria, of Somerville, passed away on Thursday, June 15th. He was 94. Born and raised in Messina, Italy, he was the son of the late Giuseppe and Maria Arria. Carmelo enlisted into the United States Army in the winter of 1953 serving during the Korean War. After his honorable discharge, he embarked on a prosperous career as a tailor.
Carmelo was an expert when it came to gardening. A green thumb came naturally. He was extremely dedicated to his garden, planting his perfectly grown tomatoes which earned him the nickname of the “Tomato King of Somerville”. There were also many herbs, perennials and annuals. He always made sure that his garden was at constant bloom and producing veggies. He enjoyed picking and gathering the abundance of produce that was available in his garden. Carmelo then would jar them so that he could enjoy them throughout the year, and he often shared them with his family and friends.
When Carmelo was not in his garden, he enjoyed cooking for his family. His Italian delicacies were made from scratch and were absolutely delicious. He loved to see his family gather around the kitchen table devouring their meals. Carmelo will be missed greatly by all.
Carmelo was the beloved husband of the late Angelina Arria. He was the devoted father of Maria Stackpole, Josephine Phaneuf and the late Madeline Arria. He was the loving grandfather of Maria F. Stackpole and Matthew C. Phaneuf and his partner Melanie. He was the caring great-grandfather of Chloe Phaneuf, Lia Meyer and Matthew Phaneuf. He was the dear brother of Frances Stanizzi and the late Johnny, Nino, and Maria Arria. Carmelo is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to visit with Carmelo’s family on Wednesday, June 21st from 10 to 11:30 AM at the Dello Russo Funeral Home, 306 Main St., Medford, followed by a celebration of life at 11:30 AM. Services will conclude burial at Saint Michael Cemetery, Boston.
