Andrien L. Abelha, 51, of New Bedford died unexpectedly on June 6, 2023. He was the youngest of eight children of the late Albert and Delores (Costa) Abelha. He was pre-deceased by his sister, Deirdre Yapchanyk.
Andrien, nicknamed “Hippy,” was gifted with an incredible intellect. He was a great conversationalist. He was one of those people who knew so much about so many things. He was truly amazing. No matter the subject, he really could get you to think. He loved all movies, but most of all science fiction movies and the exploration of the unknown. He was so well liked by his friends, many of whom from his youth, remained friends with him his entire life.
He enjoyed watching sports and loved the Red Sox dearly. A great baseball fan he shared in the sorrow and joy of his beloved team. In his youth he would attend a dozen or more games every year. At one point, he attended eight consecutive opening days. He knew the game inside and out.
He was a lifelong fan of the Miami Dolphins as well.
He will be missed dearly by his family and friends. Gone too soon he will be forever in our hearts and minds.
He is survived by his brother, Albert Abelha Jr.; sister, Deborah Abelha and her lifelong partner Peter; brother Adam Abelha and his wife Maureen; sister, Dorena Costa and her husband Dana; brother, Aaron Abelha and his wife Lara; sister, Donna Spoor and her husband Marc; and brother-in-law, Ed Yapchanyk. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles.
In accordance with his family wishes, a private graveside service will take place at Riverside Cemetery in Fairhaven, where he will be laid to rest with his parents. Arrangements are by the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. For online condolence book, please visit www.saundersdwyer.com.
