Obituary

James J. Gray III, age 56, of Salem, NH, formerly of Winchester, passed away on June 11, 2023. Born in Elizabeth, NJ, he was the son of the late James J. Gray, Jr. and Winifred F. (Michels) Gray.

James was raised and educated in Winchester and graduated from Winchester High School with the class of 1985. He worked as a manager at the Internal Revenue Service for over 20 years. In his spare time, James enjoyed spending time with his family and their pets. He also liked watching sports, Westerns, and doing puzzles. Known for his love of his Irish heritage and amazing sense of humor, he could always be found entertaining the crowd, especially at cherished holiday gatherings.

James is lovingly survived by his sisters: Deborah A. Gray and her husband Keith Oppenheim of Arlington and Dorothea Gray Papastathis and her husband Peter of Wilmington. He was predeceased by a sister, Kim Marie Gray. He was the also the dear uncle of Arthur, Alexa and Samantha “Sam” Papastathis, and is further survived by his cousins Siobhan Maize and her husband John, Samantha Smith and her husband Doug.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to gather for a Visitation at Costello Funeral Home, 177 Washington St., Winchester on Thursday, June 15 @ 9AM followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Mary’s Church, 155 Washington St., Winchester at 10AM. Burial will follow in Pine Haven Cemetery, 84 Bedford St., Burlington. In lieu of flowers, donations in James’ name may be made to the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, 350 South Huntington Ave., Boston, MA 02130. https://www.mspca.org.
