Joseph P. "Butch" Owens, a 30 year resident of Somerville and formerly of Charlestown, entered into eternal life on Friday, June 9, 2023 at Glen Ridge Nursing Care Center in Medford. He was 84 years of age.
Butch was born in Boston on May 8, 1939, a son of the late Patrick J. Owens and Leola (Grover) Owens. He grew up in Charlestown where he was educated throughout the Boston Public School system. He enlisted into the United States Marine Corps on May 17, 1956 and served his country faithfully and with pride during the Vietnam Conflict. He was honorably discharged on April 3, 1958 with the rank of Private First Class. He was a proud Marine. Butch worked as a Custodian for the Somerville School Department for over 10 years and had previously worked at The Kennedy Center in Charlestown where he once held the position of President of the Head Start Program. He enjoyed the many family trips to Newfound Lake and also enjoyed playing cards. He was known as being a practical joker with many, but most of all in Butch's life, he enjoyed his special moments with each one of his children and grandchildren and was so proud of each of their accomplishments in their lives. Butch was a dear friend of Bill W.
Butch is the husband of Barbara M. (IaMarino) Owens. He is the devoted father of Joseph Owens and his wife Christine, Michael Owens, Roseanne Foley and her husband Donald, Robin Cabral and her husband Armando, Carolanne Sullivan and her husband Sean, Barbaranne Jones and her husband William and Patrick Owens and his wife Diane. He is the loving Papa to Kyle, Courtney, Ashley, Alyse, Lisa and her husband John, Sean, Seamus, Kimberly, Jacqueline and her husband Ray, Patrick, Treavor, Maxx and his 7 great-grandchildren. He is the beloved brother of Stephen Owens, Thomas Owens and his wife Marylee, Margaret Owens, Mary Beasley and her late husband Tim and the late Barbara Owens, Patrick Owens, James Owens, John Ridlon, Robert Ridlon, Arthur Ridlon, Dorothy Ridlon and Pauline Ridlon. He is also survived by his many loving nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Butch's Funeral on Thursday, June 15, 2023 at 11 A.M. from The Carr Funeral Home, 220 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown followed by his Funeral Mass in St. Francis De Sales Church, 313 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown at 12 Noon. His visiting hours will be on Wednesday, June 14, 2023 from 3 to 7 P.M. in the funeral home. His burial will take place on Friday morning, June 16, 2023 at 10 A.M. at The Veteran's Administration National Cemetery in Bourne. (PLEASE ARRIVE AT CEMETERY FOR COMMITTAL SERVICES BY 9:45 A.M.)
