Obituary

Fairhaven - Joaquim Neto DaCruz, or Quim Correia by those who knew him well, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of Saturday, June 10, 2023. He was born in Buarcos, Figueira da Foz, Portugal, where he married Maria Alice (Gravato) DaCruz and had their daughter, Julia Maria, immigrated to the United States in 1968, and moved to New Bedford in 1978.

He spent most of his early life “ao bacalhau”, fishing for codfish in the North Atlantic. Joaquim was a strong, athletic and intelligent man. He was part of the New Bedford fishing industry for many years. Well into his 70’s, you could find him going on several mile long bike rides and walks.

Other than his wife and daughter, Joaquim was loved and will be missed by his granddaughter, Alicia Desrosiers and her spouse Matthew Desrosiers, his grandson Zachary Sousa and his partner Justina Ribeiro, his four great-grandchildren, Vera, Cruz, Sloane and Oliver; he is also survived by his sister, Fernanda Jorge of Quebec and his brother Carlos Alberto of Quebec, as well as his sister and brother in laws and many nieces and nephews.

Joaquim’s visiting hours will be held on Monday, June 12th, 2023 at Perry Funeral home from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, cremation will follow.
