Anita Virginia (Ohman) Smith, 92, of Bridgewater, passed away Tuesday June 6 at the Life Care Center of West Bridgewater.
Born March 8, 1931 in Brockton, Massachusetts to the late Emil and Edith (Lindberg) Ohman.
Anita was the beloved wife of the late Walter G. Smith.
She was the last surviving of her three siblings and lost her 94-year-old brother, Edgar a year ago.
She is survived by her children Linda Eskine and her husband Steve of Georgia, David Smith of Maine, Christine Korske and her husband Lawrence of Maine, and Edward Smith and his wife Dianne of Middleboro, Massachusetts. As well as grand and great grandchildren.
Anita worked as a switchboard operator in Brockton, secretary to the president of Atherton’s Furniture in Brockton, where many of her relatives also worked. She was employed at Knapp Shoes for several years in the Tag Dept in Brockton.
She was a devoted, long-time member of the Joy in Christ Lutheran Church in Abington as a choir member, secretary, and Sunday school teacher. Anita was a member of the Bridgewater Senior Center where she enjoyed many years and friends in the painting group, participating in the annual state House holiday card competition and traveling on the bus to various events and museums.
The family enjoyed many years camping and boating with her beloved Walter. Her favorite places were the ocean and sitting in her screen porch watching the birds and butterflies. Anita was very special to her family and many friends and all the animals that were part of her life. She was always willing to help those in need, opening her heart and her home to foster children from Little Wanderers of Boston and the many friends of all her children. Her neighbors and friends knew she would not hesitate to lend a helping hand. Anita will be remembered for her extraordinary heart, her compassion, and her quick wit.
Family and friends are invited to attend her visitation Thursday, June 15th from 5:00-7:00 PM, in the Blanchard Funeral Chapel, Plymouth Street (Rte. 58 @ the rotary) Whitman. A funeral service will be held Friday, June 16 at 10:00 AM in the Blanchard Funeral Chapel, with a burial to follow at the Massachusetts National Cemetery, in Bourne at 12:30 PM.
A celebration of Anita’s life will be held following the burial at 2:30 PM, at the home of Edward Smith, 160 Rivers Edge Drive, Middleboro, MA 02346
