1944-2023
BUXTON- Michael W. Burns, age 78, husband of Maureen (Moulton) Burns, died unexpectedly on June 5, 2023, at Maine Medical Center related to a heart condition. Mike was a devoted husband and had a wide circle of friends. He was affectionately known as “Burnsy” by family and close friends. He will be greatly missed.
Mike was a graduate from Thornton Academy and attended RETS Electronics School in Boston. Mike, also, graduated from SMVTI (Southern Maine Vocational Technical Institute) Automotive Technology. He was working as a heavy truck and equipment mechanic when he enlisted into the US Army where he served his country in the Vietnam War. After his honorable discharge from the service, he went to work for Thompson Machine in Westbrook and then Seacoast Tractor in Scarborough, returning to Thompson Machine for many years. For the last 18 years of his career, Mike was employed by Chadwick BaRoss in Westbrook where he retired from. Throughout his life, he always exhibited a strong work ethic no matter what the job was or who he worked for. He also held a CDL (Commercial Driver License) for decades.
In his younger years, Mike enjoyed downhill skiing and ice skating. He was an active member of the Jaycees, Lion’s Club, and later the Maine Garden Railway Society. He also enjoyed cross country skiing, motorcycling and snowmobiling and helped establish the Sokokis Riders Snowmobile Club. Mike and Maureen rode many miles on their motorcycle and snowmobiles with family and friends. Mike always enjoyed sailing. He had a Hunter sailboat in Portland Harbor named Miss “B” Haven. There are many fond memories of sailing Casco Bay and Downeast Maine with family and friends.
Mike had a soft spot for animals especially dogs and cats. He was known to take in a stray cat or two over the years.
Michael requested no formal funeral service. There will, however, be visiting hours Thursday, June 22, 2023, from 4 pm to 6 pm with Military Honors at 6:00 pm to be held at the Chad E. Poitras Cremation and Funeral Service Chapel, 498 Long Plains Road (Rt. 22) in Buxton. A private family burial will be held at a later date.
