Joao D. Resendes, 84, of Lowell, passed away Sunday, June 4, 2023, at Lowell General Hospital surrounded by his loving family. For over 60 years, he was the beloved husband to Lucia (Pacheco) Resendes.
A son of the late Jose and the late Maria Isabelle Resendes, he was born September 17, 1938, in Sao Miguel, Azores, Portugal and was raised and educated in Sao Miguel. He moved to Canada for a few years before coming to the United States in 1976.
Joao worked as a machine operator in textile manufacturing for many years, for Carroll Shoe, Joan Fabrics, Prince Macaroni, Old Mother Hubbard, and Majilite until his retirement.
While in Portugal, he worked in the fields and as a landscaper, enjoyed hunting, but loved fishing. In the United States, he loved to fish, and enjoyed time spend at the Blue’s and Red’s Clubs when he wasn’t enjoying time spend with his loving family.
In addition to his wife, Lucia, he is survived by his children, Estrella ‘Star’ Resendes of Lowell, Helena Resendes of Lowell, Natalie Resendes of Fall River, Ricardo Resendes of Portugal, Suseta ‘Suzy’ Resendes and her husband Boston Gonzalez, of Lowell, Joao Resendes of Lowell, and Ana Resendes of Lowell; his twelve grandchildren, his eight great grandchildren as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
He was predeceased by his son Claudio Resendes who died in 2014, as well as his siblings, Ilbert Resendes, Jose Resendes, Sylvester Resendes, Thomas Resendes and Conceicao Resendes.
On Thursday, June 8, 2023 all are welcome to attend his calling hours from 4pm until 8pm at McDonough Funeral Home, 14 Highland Street, Lowell, 978-458-6816.
On Friday morning, his funeral will begin at 10 a.m. at the funeral home, followed by procession for his funeral Mass at 11 a.m. at St. Anthony Church, 893 Central Street Lowell. Procession will follow for burial at St. Patrick Cemetery on Gorham Street in Lowell.
