Wilfrid “Frero” Dorlus was born on July 17, 1950 in Saint-Marc, Haiti to the late Phideline Jules and the late Alexandre Dorlus. He grew up in the neighboring town of Montrouis and attended school at Lecole National Deluge.
At age 17, Wilfrid enlisted in the Haitian Army to help provide for his parents and siblings. At such an early age, he felt obligated to provide, serve, and protect his family. In the Haitian Army, he served as an elite member of the Palace Guard (“not to be mistaken with the Tonton Macoutes,” he’d say). As a member of the Palace Guard, Wilfrid helped protect the notorious President Francois Duvalier aka “Papa Doc.” After his tenure in the army, Sergeant Dorlus went on to provide private security for some of Haiti’s elite families.
In 1971, Wilfrid met 19-year old Micheline Ferus. After three years of courting, they married on June 1, 1974. Their first 3 years of marriage were happy and tragic — with the birthes and passing of their first three children in infancy. They did not have any more children for the rest of their time, living in Haiti. At 31, Wilfrid immigrated to Boston to provide a better life for him and his wife. Micheline joined him the following year. The next few years were met with joy. In 1983, they welcomed Wilfred Dorlus, Jr. to the world followed by Marshal four years later. And by the grace of God, Wilfrid and Micheline witnessed their baby boys grow up to become honorable men. In addition to working tirelessly to provide for his immediate family, Wilfrid was a very supportive and compassionate brother, son, and friend. Wilfrid worked mostly in manufacturing for companies such as the James River Paper Mill, Gillette, and Coca-Cola. He loved working for Coca-Cola.
In his free time, Wilfrid could be found at home listening to the Haitian Radio, having heated debates over
politics (mostly about Haiti), cleaning his car, or watching soccer. Despite becoming a US Citizen in 2015, Wilfrid was incredibly prideful of Haiti even in a time when he nor any of us are proud of what Haiti has become. His greatest joy was the two-story home he spent so much time building in Haiti—and he loved to show pictures and video to anyone who cared to see them. Perhaps knowing this makes it fitting that on May 17, 2023, he passed away in his beloved 2-story home in Montrouis. Although he is not with us in the physical form, he will forever live in our hearts.
Wilfrid is survived by Micheline Dorlus; his two sons, Wilfred Dorlus, Jr. and Marshal Dorlus; his daughters-in-law, Alanna Harris and Jessieka D. Dorlus; his grandchildren, Zani H.
