FALMOUTH- Stanley Robert Goodnow of Falmouth, Maine, passed away at the age of 92 on June 2, 2023.
Stan Goodnow was born in Ticonderoga, NY, on May 31, 1931, to Robert Gibson Goodnow and Margaret Swett Goodnow. He is survived by his devoted wife of 68 years, Roberta “Bobbie” Quirk Goodnow; children Bruce S. Goodnow and his wife Kathy of Newburyport, MA, and Jennifer E. Goodnow and her husband Michael Kaminsky of Madison, CT; grandson Andrew J. Goodnow and his wife Eliza of New York City, and granddaughter Allison R. Kaminsky of Brookline, MA; and former daughter-in-law Christine Grillo of Summerville, SC. He was predeceased by his sister, Dorothy Horgan McGee.
A graduate of the University of Massachusetts, Stan was an officer in the Air Force during the Korean War before earning a graduate degree in regional planning from the University of Michigan (Go Blue!) where he met his friend and another future Mainer, Gerry Whiting. Stan was the co-founder of Land Use Consultants and went on to be the President of Arcadia Company and The Dartmouth Company and a Vice President of Consumers Water Company.
He was an avid traveler, sailor, and outdoorsman. Stan and Bobbie were longtime members of the Portland Yacht Club, sailing the coast of Maine with enthusiasm. He looked forward to his annual canoe trip on the white waters of Maine with his friend and former business partner, David Haynes. Stan and Bobbie traveled all fifty states and visited nearly every National Park. He loved the Grand Canyon, volunteering his time to preserve the park and build new trails — he spoke fondly of enjoying a glass of whiskey while he watched the sun set over the canyon.
Stan spent his time in retirement sharing his love of Maine and its waters with others by volunteering at the Maine Maritime Museum and The Portland Observatory. He was dedicated to causes for the greater good, serving on the Board of Directors of the Indiana State American Civil Liberties Union in the 1960s and the Board of Directors for the Natural Resource Council of Maine.
Stan lived a full 92 years and leaves filled with gratitude for his friends, family, and the opportunities of the great State of Maine.
For those who wish to remember Stan, please consider contributing to the Maine Maritime Museum or The Portland Observatory.
