Obituary

Virginia Puckett Hughes, 98, of Fitzgerald, Georgia passed away at Maple Court, an assisted living home in Tifton, on May 30, 2023.

The funeral will be held in the chapel of Paulk Funeral Home, 11 AM, Saturday, June 3, 2023, in Fitzgerald, Georgia. Visitation will be one hour before the service in the chapel. There will be no interment service.

Mrs. Hughes was born June 28, 1924, in Brookneal, Virginia to the late Christopher and Mattie Puckett. She graduated in 1942 from Randolph-Henry High School in Charlotte County, Virginia. After graduation, she was employed as a secretary in the Ordnance Department, U.S. Army Base in Norfolk, Virginia, where she served until the end of World War II.

Mrs. Hughes met her husband, Paul D. Hughes, Sr., from Cairo, Georgia, while he was serving in the Navy, stationed in Norfolk. After her marriage in 1946, she moved to Tallahassee, Florida, where her husband graduated from Florida State University. After three years as Assistant Principal at Crawfordville High School in Florida, Mr. Hughes became Supervising Principal of the three ward schools in Fitzgerald in 1954. Mrs. Hughes was then employed here as a bookkeeper for Mann Construction Co., later Mann & Massee, Inc., for over twenty years, retiring in 1981 from Mann & Harper, Inc.

She was a faithful member of First Baptist Church in Fitzgerald where she was a member of the Rebekah Sunday School Class. She was a former Pink Lady at Dorminy Medical Center. She loved to read and was an excellent cook and homemaker. She was an avid bridge player and belonged to several clubs.

Mrs. Hughes is survived by her two sons: Dan (Martha Ellen) Hughes of Lake City, Florida and Chris (Susan) Hughes of Fitzgerald; grandchildren: Rob (Amber) Hughes, Sam (Kim) Hughes and Steve (Shelbi) Hughes; and six great-grandchildren: Griphyn Harper, Attica Hughes, Aubree Hughes, Lilly Hughes, Winnie Hughes and Maggie Hughes. She was preceded in death by her parents, all of her siblings and her husband.
