Obituary

EAST LONGMEADOW - Christopher J. "Doc" McMahon, 72, of East Longmeadow, was Called Safely Home on Friday, May 26, 2023. He passed into Eternal Life after a long illness at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving wife, Elaine. He was born in Springfield on April 15, 1951, a beloved son of the late Thomas A. and Helen (Footman) McMahon. He was raised and educated in Springfield and had moved to East Longmeadow in 2014. He served his country in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. Later in life, he reenlisted in the United States Army where he served as a Medic and retired after 20 years with the rank of Staff Sergeant. He served with the 405th Combat Support Hospital out of West Hartford, CT. Shortly after the 9/11 attacks, Chris was deployed to the Horn of Africa. He also served in Iraq with the 411th Civil Affairs United out of Danbury, CT and the 947th Forward Surgical Team under Special Operation Command out of West Hartford in Afghanistan. Among his numerous ribbons and medals, he was awarded the Special Forces Combat Patch, the Combat Medic Badge in Afghanistan, the meritorious Bronze Star for saving the life of an Iraqi child, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Campaign Star, the Armed Forces Reserve Medal with 20 Year Device Silver Hourglass, the Army Commendation Medal, the United States Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. Before retiring, he was employed as a Correctional Officer with the Hampden County Jail and House of Corrections in Ludlow and he served as a Deputy Sheriff and member of the Tactical Team for the Hampden County Sheriff's Department in Springfield. Following his retirement, his educational background allowed him to give back to the community and he volunteered for many years as an Early Recovery Counselor at the Hope Center in Springfield and was a life member of the Springfield No. 68 Disabled American Veterans. He was a communicant of Saint Michael Church in East Longmeadow and a member of the Springfield Sportsmen's Club in Monson. During his leisure time, he enjoyed many days with his beloved wife, Elaine and their canine companion, Maggie with their long treks hiking the mountains of California and Connecticut and appreciated every moment they had with each other. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. His family would like to extend their deepest thanks to the staff at Baystate Medical Center, most especially the exemplary staff on Wesson Unit No. 4 for their unwavering dedication and kindness towards Chris and his family during the past three months. He leaves his beloved wife and best friend, Elaine M. (Garatti) Blazejowski McMahon; his two loving step children, Sara Robitaille and her husband, Keith, of Chicopee and Paul Blazejowski and his wife, Becca, of Southampton; and his three awesome step grandchildren, Nathan, Cole and Morgan; his six dear siblings, Brian McMahon and his wife, Valerie, and Michael McMahon and his wife, Kim, all of California, Patty Howerter and Tommy McMahon and his wife, Elise, all of South Carolina, Mary Squires and her husband, Tony, of Vermont and Sheila McMahon and her husband, Jon, of Worcester; and his many dear nephews, nieces, cousins, extended family members and friends to treasure his memory of a life well served and lived to its fullest. His family will receive friends at the St. Pierre-Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107 on Thursday, June 8, 2023 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. His Funeral will be held on Friday, June 9, 2023 beginning at the funeral home at 9 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at Saint Michael Church, 110 Maple Street, East Longmeadow, MA 01028. His Committal Service with United States Army Military Honors will follow the Mass at 1 p.m. in the Chapel at the Massachusetts Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main Street, Agawam, MA 01101.
