1937 – 2023
HOLLIS- Sylvia Smith passed away peacefully at her home on Thursday May 25 at the age of 85 in the company of her family.
Sylvia is predeceased by her husband Howard Lee Smith, whom she married on August 28, 1955, her parents Lawson and Barbara Nichols, her brothers William Nichols and Nathan Nichols, and her two grandchildren Michael Nugent and Alex McInnis.
She is survived by her children Doug Smith, Laurie Montieth, Chris Smith, Elaine Polky, and Jean McInnis, her grandchildren Mathew Nugent, Sara Logan, Natalie Smith, Travis Smith, Chelsea Hernandaz, Robert Polky, and Lee Polky, her great grandchildren Colby Nugent, Collin Nugent, Shiloh Nugent, Haylee Logan, Sadie Logan, Max Hernandez, Nevaeh Hernandez, Gabrielle Hernandez, Marlow Nugent, and Parker Nugent.
Sylvia was born in Portland Maine on August 28, 1937, she was the oldest of her 7 siblings. She graduated from Hollis High School in 1955 and was the valedictorian of her class and went on to become the Town clerk and a Selectman of Hollis Center Maine. She also owned two businesses Nichols Trailer Park and Your Country Store. She became a real estate agent and paralegal later on in life and was a volunteer librarian for the Hollis Center Library for many years.
She was a lifelong member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. Sylvia also enjoyed knitting and donated many slippers and blankets to local child day cares and nursing homes in the area. She also enjoyed reading, gardening, birdwatching, summers at Pine Point beach, and volunteering at Gorham House with her favorite companion dog Brady.
A graveside service will be held privately amongst her family at Meeting House Hill Cemetery in Hollis.
Everyone is welcome to celebrate Sylvia’s life at her home, 23 West Old Alfred Road, Hollis on Saturday June 3rd at 3 PM.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hollis Center Library.
