Obituary

Alexandrino M. Medina, 74, of Lowell, affectionately known as Alex, passed away peacefully after a brief illness on Thursday, May 25, 2023 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Maria Manuela (Bettencourt) Medina with whom, last summer, just celebrated over fifty years of marriage.

He was born on October 26, 1948 in Graciosa, Azores, Portugal and was a son of the late Cirino and Celeste (Pereira) Medina. At a young age, his mother passed away and his family came together to raise him. Adelaide Teles, Lucia Medina and the late Joao Manuel Medina were an instrumental part of his childhood.

He attended the area schools in Graciosa, where he met his wife working together at a local store. Alex served in the Portuguese Military, serving in Angola, before marrying Manuela in 1972. Together they relocated to the United States, settling in Lowell to raise their family.

Alex lived in the Belvidere neighborhood of Lowell for over fifty years; was a communicant of St. Anthony Church; and was a member of the Portuguese American Center "The Blues Club" the Portuguese American Civic League "The Reds Club", the Holy Ghost Society and Santissima Trindade.

He began his working career in Lowell at Grace Shoe for many years before working for Majilite for the majority of his career, retiring in 2015. He enjoyed fishing, tending to his garden, and watching and supporting Sporting FC. Traveling to his native home in Graciosa, enjoying ‘lapas’ and a good bull fight, which were two of his favorite things. Alex took pride in his home and property and loved repairing and building things around the house. Above all else, time spent with his beloved wife, children and grandchildren brought him the most happiness.

In addition to his soul mate, Maria Manuela Medina of Lowell; he is survived by his four children, Marilyn Tavares and her husband, Nelson of Lowell, Sonia Quaresma and her husband, Thiago of Lowell, Filipe Medina and his wife, Teresa of Dracut, and Monica Avelino and her husband, Eliezer of Lowell; his ten grandchildren, Isaac and Alexia Tavares of Lowell, Maveric and Katia Quaresma of Lowell, Mila and Tatum Medina of Dracut, Maddox, Elciana, Matteo and Emerie Avelino of Lowell, and he was looking forward to his 11th grandchild.

He is also survived by his brother, Sergio Medina and his wife, Conceicao, their daughters, Andreia Medina, Sara Faria and her husband, Ruben, and their daughter, Beatriz, all of Terceira, Azores, Portugal, and several nieces, nephews, and godchildren, including Michael and Marco Paulo of Dracut, Shana and Jose Maria of Lowell.

He is additionally survived by his in-laws, the late Valquiro Bettencourt and his wife, Livramento, Paulo Jorge Bettencourt and his wife, Lucia, Eduarda Silva, Celeste Veiga and her husband, Manuel, Helena Silva and her husband, Joe, and John Silva.

On Saturday, May 27, 2023 all are welcome to attend his calling hours from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. at St. Anthony Church, 893 Central Street, Lowell. His funeral mass will take place in the church at 1 p.m., followed by procession to Saint Mary Cemetery in Tewksbury.
