WEST BROOKFIELD; Sophia C. (Grabierz, Thompson) Markiewicz, 101, died Thursday, May 18, 2023, at Quaboag Rehab and Skilled Nursing Care Center.
She was the wife of Edward Markiewicz who died in 2004.
She leaves two daughters, Susan D. Jorritsma of Spencer, Candy R. Nelson and her husband Roger of Cherry Valley, three grandchildren; Aaron, Andrew and Amanda Nelson,
five great-grandchildren; Joshua, Jillian, Joseph, Ava and Sarah Nelson. A niece, Janice Brooks of Tacoma, Washington.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Earl George Thompson in 1971, three brothers, Edward, John and Benedict Grabierz and a sister Stella Grabierz.
Born in Bristol, CT., she was the daughter of Martin & Ava (Grodowicz) Grabierz and lived in Springfield, Leicester, Athol, and West Boylston for many years before moving to Auburn and then West Brookfield.
Sophia spent her youth in foster care in Worcester and Cherry Valley. She was a graduate of Commerce High School in Worcester and won a scholarship to the Worcester Art Museum.
Her first jobs in Worcester were at Reed and Prince making wing nuts and secretarial work at Hillcrest Dairy, where she found lifelong friends. She was a leader in Camp Fire Girls and 4-H in Cherry Valley.
She also worked as a florist's assistant in Athol.
She was an accomplished seamstress, loved ballroom dancing with Eddie, enjoyed decorating her home, her beautiful gardens, and loved cats.
The family greatly appreciates the exceptionally kind and loving care given to her during her stay at Quaboag Rehab's Memory care.
Calling hours are Tuesday, from 5-7 P.M. in the funeral home.
A Funeral Service will be held Wednesday, May 24 at 11:00 A.M. in the MORIN FUNERAL HOME, 1131 Main St., Leicester. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Leicester.
