It is with a heavy heart full of both love and sadness that we remember Marion (Hynes) Deftos, who passed away at the age of 96. Marion was the daughter of the late James and Angie (Hamm) Hynes, and the wife of the late Thomas Deftos.
Marion’s legacy lives on through her three sons, Ron Crisona of Brockton, Thomas Deftos of Brockton, Daniel Deftos of East Bridgewater and her adoring grandchildren, Amanda, Laci, Lyla, and Luke. She will also be remembered by her many nieces and nephews.
She was born in Whitman, MA, and was the last of nine siblings. She spent her entire life cherishing the small town that held so many precious memories for her.
Marion was a proud graduate of Whitman High School, Class of 1943. She was not only a talented basketball player and cheerleader, but she was also an accomplished student who held her academic achievements in high regard.
Music was also a great source of enjoyment for Marion. She had a beautiful singing voice and would often reminisce about singing for strangers at Duvals in downtown Whitman. Later on, she sang with local Big Bands and instilled her love of music in her family.
Marion’s family owned the Brockton Dairy Queen on North Main Street for over 60 years, and she was incredibly proud of that fact. But above all else, Marion took the greatest pride in her children and grandchildren. She loved nothing more than to share their accomplishments and stories with anyone who would listen.
Marion lived a long and independent life, and at 93 years old, she even traveled to the Brockton DMV to renew her license on her own. She was a strong and resilient woman who imparted pearls of wisdom and family history to her loved ones, hoping to guide them through their own daily lives.
Marion had a deep and abiding love for her mother, often sharing sweet stories about her. Although we will miss her greatly, we take comfort in the knowledge that Marion is now reunited with her family, especially her beloved mother.
Rest in peace, Marion. Your love and presence will be deeply missed by all who knew you.
Family and friends are invited to attend her funeral service Saturday May 20th at 10:00 AM, at the Blanchard Funeral Chapel, Plymouth Street (Rte. 58 @ the rotary) Whitman. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Brockton. Visiting hours will be held on Friday May 19 from 4:00- 7:00 PM for those who wish to share memories as well as their condolences.
