Edith Hallgren, 89

Dateline: Mansfield, MA

Edith “Edie” Hallgren was born on May 17, 1933 in Greenfield, MA. She was the daughter of Donald W. and Isabelle (Herron) Lilly of Ashfield, MA. She grew up in Ashfield and graduated from Sanderson Academy High School in Ashfield in 1951. She received an associate degree as a medical secretary from Becker Junior College in Worcester, MA in 1953. She worked her first job as a medical secretary in Darien, CT from 1953 to 1957.

In 1956, Edie married Ronald Hallgren from Stamford, CT, and moved to Bethel, CT, where they had four children. After an 8 year leave to raise her children, she returned to the medical field, where she worked for a variety of medical practices until 1993. In 1974, Edie and her husband moved to Mansfield, MA, where she later worked for the Mansfield Library and the Mansfield YMCA. An active member of the Mansfield Congregational Church, Edie loved traveling, reading, music and being a wife, mother and grandmother.

Edie is survived by her husband, Ronald, and their four children, Karen Stepka and her husband, Ken, of Annandale, VA, David Hallgren and his wife, Donna, of Mansfield, Wayne and his partner Cathy Ingargiola, of Norton, and John Hallgren and his wife, Patricia of Mansfield. She leaves 11 grandchildren and several of their spouses, Rachel, Sarah and Andrew Stepka; Brett (Disha), Jill (Katie), and Sheila Hallgren, and Joey, Anthony and Jake Hallgren and Brittany and Macey Hallgren. She also leaves one sister and her husband, Joan and Ronald Rickard, of Gill, MA, sister-in-law Margaret Lilly, of Ashfield, MA and brother-in-law David Nims of Colrain, MA. Additionally, she leaves many nieces and nephews, and dear friends.

Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend visiting hours on Thursday, May 11th from 4:00-7:00 P.M. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home, 55 North Main Street, Mansfield.

A service in celebration of her life will be held on Friday, May 12th at 11:00 at the Mansfield Congregational Church, 17 West Street, Mansfield. Burial will follow at the Spring Brook Cemetery in Mansfield.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Memorial Committee of the Mansfield Congregational Church, 17 West Street, Mansfield, MA 02048 or to Friends of the Council On Aging in Mansfield, 255 Hope Street, Mansfield, MA 02048.
