WEST SPRINGFIELD – Katherine M. "Kay" (Foley) Moynihan, 89, of West Springfield, was Called Safely Home on Wednesday, April 26, 2023. She passed into Eternal Life at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield surrounded by the care and comfort of her loving family. She was born on Tuesday, May 30, 1933, a beloved daughter of the late John P. and Catherine M. (Noonan) Foley. She was a graduate of Sacred Heart Elementary and High School and the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in 1954, all in Springfield. Kay was employed as a Registered Nurse at the Mercy Hospital Operating Room and the Baystate Medical Center Neurology Department, both in Springfield, the Visiting Nurse Association, the former Mount Saint Vincent Nursing Home in Holyoke and retired as a School Nurse from the West Springfield School Department. She continued her nursing career as a volunteer at the Brightside School Health Services and Mount Saint Vincent Nursing Home. She also assisted her husband, Jack, as a medical appointments driver at the West Springfield Senior Center and Saint Thomas Church delivering their annual Thanksgiving Meals. She was a member of the American Nurse, the Operating Room Nurses and the Neurological Nurses Associations. She was a frequent blood donor and participated in the Harvard Nursing Health Study for 25 years. She had a passion for gardening, cooking, sewing, quilting and loved animals. During her leisure time, she enjoyed golfing and playing tennis and was a member of the Franconia Women's Nine Hole Golf League in Springfield. She loved traveling to Florida and Vermont and visiting historic sites in many states. She was a longtime communicant of Sacred Heart Church in Springfield where she also was a member of the Over 60 Club of the Church. She also was a past member of the Knitting Class at Providence Place in Holyoke and the West Springfield Senior Center. Above all, she loved spending time with her family and her many friends. She leaves her beloved husband and best friend, John A. "Jack" Moynihan. They were married on September 8, 1956 at Sacred Heart Church in Springfield and were blessed with over 66 years of happiness together. She also leaves her two loving daughters, MaryBeth Verge and her husband, Robert, of Lunenburg, MA and Anne T. Moynihan of Rocky Hill, CT; her four sisters in law, Dorothy Guindon of West Springfield, Mildred Whelihan of Holyoke and Betty Foley and Eileen Foley, both of West Springfield; and her many nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her two sisters, Mary Kelleher and her husbands, George and James, Joan McDonald and her husband, Martin; her two brothers, John Foley and his first wife, Margaret, and Thomas Foley; her sister in law, Sister Mildred St. John Moynihan, SND; and her two brothers in law, C. Edward Guindon, Jr. and Jack Whelihan. Her Funeral will be held on Wednesday, May 3, 2023 beginning at the St. Pierre-Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107, (funeral home will open at 8:30 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 395 Chestnut Street, Springfield, MA 01104. Her Burial will follow the Mass at Saint Thomas Cemetery, 420 Kings Highway, West Springfield, MA 01089. Her family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, May 2, 2023 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Her family requests that memorial donations be made in her memory to the Sacred Heart Church Renovation Fund, 395 Chestnut Street, Springfield, MA 01104.
