We are deeply saddened by the passing of Rita O'Brien, a beloved member of both the South Boston and Hanover communities. Rita passed away peacefully at her home on April 23, 2023, surrounded by her loved ones.
Rita was born and raised in Boston, where she attended Hyde Park High School, graduating in 1956. Shortly thereafter, she met her husband, Bernard O’Brien, and together they raised their family in South Boston. Rita was a devoted wife to Bernard for 46 years. Loving mother to Cheryl of South Boston, the late Bernard “Bernie” and his wife, the late Noreen “Renie” of Melrose, Linda Buckley and her husband Robert of Hanover, and Warren of South Boston. She was also a cherished grandmother to David Buckley and his wife Jenny of Hanover, Richard Buckley and his wife Jillian of South Boston, Christian Buckley of Hanover, Caitlin O’Brien Pacheco and her husband Jonathan of Hanover, and Sean O’Brien and his wife Jillian of South Boston. Rita was a proud and loving great-grandmother to Bobby, Jack, Wesley, and Owen. Loved by her fur babies Tess, Archie and Vinny. She is survived by her dear brother Warren O’Brien. Preceded in death by her sisters Mary Cole (O’Brien) and Catherine Hayden (O’Brien). Also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Rita spent many years working in the Neonatal Unit at St. Margaret's and St. Elizabeth's Hospital. During her time there, she oversaw countless newborns and made many friends along the way. She enjoyed going on cruises, watching movies, drawing, listening to music, sitting by the water, and taking weekend trips to Lake Winnipesaukee. Most of all, she cherished spending time with her family and friends, especially her grand and great-grandchildren. Rita will be deeply missed by all who knew her, but her memory will live on forever in the hearts of those she touched with her kindness, love, and devotion.
A Mass in celebration of Rita’s life will be held at St. Mary’s Church, located at 392 Hanover St. Hanover MA, at 9:00 AM on Friday, April 28, 2023.
