Antonio Alves, 77, passed away after a lengthy illness on April 19, 2023, at Lowell General Hospital with his family by his side. He was the husband of Laurinda (Morais) Alves, they would have celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary this Christmas Eve.
He was born on December 8, 1945 in Topo, Sao Jorge, Azores. Antonio moved to Faja dos Vimes, Sao Jorge, at the age of 9 months. He grew up and was educated in that area, and that is where he met his wife and started their family. He also proudly served with the Portuguese Military.
He came to the United States in August 1976, settling in Lowell, where he worked in a fish factory, Wang Labs, and Altron Inc. He eventually started his own business, Antonio Alves Fresh Fish and Seafood.
Antonio was a member of the Holy Ghost Society, the Portuguese American Center (Blues club), and Portuguese American Civic League (Reds club). He was a former president and director of Santissima Trindade and a communicant of Saint Anthony's Church.
Antonio enjoyed fishing, gardening, making his own wine, spending time with his family and friends, and vacationing back home in Faja dos Vimes in the summer.
In addition to his wife, Laurinda, he is survived by his two daughters, Honoria Alves of Lowell, and Grace Gomes and her husband Paulo of Lowell. He is predeceased by his first son Abilio. In Addition he is survived by his sister Trindade of Velas Sao Jorge and his brother Rafael of Terceira Azores, as well as many brothers and sisters-in-law, Julio and his wife Sarafina Morais, Sao Pedro Matias of Sao Jorge Azores, Rita Fontes of California, Idalina Furtado of Montreal Canada, Leocadia Luis of Sao Jorge, and Fr. Abilio Morais of Terceira Azores. His Godchildren, many nieces, nephews and friends, cousins in Massachusetts, Azores, California, Canada, Idaho, and Portugal.
Antonio was predeceased by his brother Manuel of California, his sister Conceicao of Terceira Azores, his mother and father in law, Alberto and Silvina Morais, his brothers and sisters-in-law Maria Honoria Morais, Fernando and Maria Sousa, Jose Furtado, Jose Paulo and Albertina Sousa, Antonio Matias, Jorge Fontes and Luciano Luis.
You invited to his calling hours on Tuesday April 25, 2023 from 9:00 am until 11:00 am at the McDonough Funeral Home, 14 Highland Street, Lowell, MA 01852. His funeral Mass will take place on Tuesday in Saint Anthony's Church, 893 Central Street, Lowell, MA at 12 noon. Followed by procession to the Immaculate Conception Cemetery Mausoleum.
