James C. ‘Jim’ Allen, 84, of Mystic, passed away on April 3, 2023. He was the son of Lewis C. And Florence R. Allen, born in Bath NY on March 22, 1939.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Shirley (Edgecomb) Allen, daughters Cindy Williams and her children Melanie and Rose; Terri, her husband Ed Kane, and her children William and Samantha; and several Great grandchildren; 3 brothers in law; Robert, Byron and Bruce Edgecomb, and cousin Marlene Schuld.
He will be greatly missed by them and countless others that have become like family to him.
Jim was a hard worker and tried out many lines of work as a young man. He started out in a Milk Processing Plant first. Later he learned all about drilling water wells in the Finger Lakes (New York) where he lived. During that time he got a taste of farming and learned all about growing Finger Lakes grapes. By the late ‘70’s he was managing a farm that had 100 acres of vineyards. He loved being outside and seeing things grow.
Time for change
After a few visits to the Mystic area he decided it was time to make a change. His mother and father in law were living in Groton and he fell in love with it here. He loved being by the ocean and got hooked on Deep Sea fishing.
So by 1981 he had moved closer to Mystic.
He got a new career started by getting a job at Simon Ford in Norwich. He finally had an inside job! He worked at several Dealerships in the area over the next few years and has lived in Mystic since 1992.
Jim was always busy. When he retired he decided to build birdhouses. In a month he had made 31. Rose helped him. It was a fun project and now many years later there are a few of them still being used by our resident birds and squirrels.
He was always ready for a project. When it came to be time for home maintenance, out would come the tools. He was handy with a paintbrush or Chimney sweep brushes. He cleaned the chimney several times ‘for the last time’. It was hard for him to pass those tasks over to others. Will was a great help to us during that time of change.
And our granddaughters loved bringing him his favorite…chocolate chip cookies ??
He always had time to be outside. Time spent with family and friends was precious to him. Riding his bike or just going for a walk. He was a great host for the many picnics at the family home.
He enjoyed waking up early and watching the morning light share surprises. Sometimes he might see a Momma deer with her twins. He even might have spotted a buck passing through and would tell us how many points it had. He loved the variety of wildlife around home and couldn’t wait to tell the rest of the family what they had missed while they slept in??
Last but not least is his love of kitties. His beloved Tom misses him. Jim loved his fur babies!
