Obituary

Michael P. Bird, 59, of Halifax, MA passed away Tuesday, April 4.

He was born in Plymouth, MA, raised in Oxford, MA and resided in Halifax the past 29 years.

Michael leaves his wife of 35 years, Susan (Sprague) Bird; his parents Walter C. Bird Sr. and Mary K. (Nava) Bird; his brothers, Mark E. and his wife Lisa Bird, Walter C. Bird Jr, Joseph F., and his wife Carol Bird; as well as his in-laws George and Anita Sprague, his aunts and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

From a young age, Michael always wanted to know how things worked – even if it meant taking them apart. This eventually led him to positions that utilized his technical knowledge in the repair of ophthalmic equipment and processing of optical gratings used for high powered lasers.

Michael loved riding sport bikes, whether it was going too fast on the “S” curves of 290 in Worcester or doing tricks. He had an eclectic taste in music and enjoyed watching movies and hanging with his dogs.

Michael also possessed a sense of humor that could reduce people to fits of laughter. Some of his antics were not always intended to produce laughs, such as the time he attempted to drive his station wagon between his parents’ garage and the neighbors’ fence resulting in the car becoming wedged between the two. Then there was the time he and a close friend, Lance, hopped a train in Oxford, jumped off when it slowed in Auburn, and hoofed it back home, deciding not to risk their parents’ wrath by calling for a ride. Ever the loving and protective soul, Michael came to the aid of his brothers and friends on multiple occasions when he saw them being bullied or harassed.

As an adult, Michael battled mental health issues, including bipolar disorder. Although these challenges had a profound impact on his life, Michael persevered, aided by his caring and loving wife.
