Joao E. Quadros, 94, of Lowell, passed away on Monday, April 3, 2023, at Northwood Rehabilitation & Health Care Center after a lengthy illness. He was predeceased by his wife, Maria (DeMelo) Quadros, who passed away in November of 2021 after 66 years of marriage.
Joao was born on October 12, 1928, in Graciosa, Azores, Portugal, the son of the late Manuel and Maria (Espinola) Quadros. He grew up and was educated in Graciosa. He met and married his wife, Maria, and after they had their daughter, Maria, they came to the United States and settled in the Back Central Neighborhood of Lowell.
He was a communicant of Saint Anthony’s Church and an active member of the Portuguese community, including the Holy Ghost society, the "Red's Club" Portuguese American Civic League, and the "Blue's Club" Portuguese American Center. He worked for over thirty years at Hickory Hill Golf Course in Dracut and took great pride in his garden and grapevine, which he often tended to.
Joao is survived by his son David V. Quadros and his wife Lisa of Hudson, NH; his son-in-law Antonio Cunha of Tewksbury; his beloved grandchildren, Anne Borba of Lowell, Nicole Quadros of Wakefield, MA, and Alex Quadros of Hudson, NH; his three great-grandchildren, Kevin Borba, Katelyn Borba, and Natalie Borba Morales; and six great-great-grandchildren. He also leaves his sister Gloria Mello, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was predeceased by his daughter, Maria T. Cunha, his grandson Michael Cunha, as well as his sisters, Evangeline E. DaSilva and Eliza E. Picanso.
Visiting hours will be held on Monday, April 10, 2023, from 4-7 p.m. at McDonough Funeral Home, 14 Highland Street, Lowell, MA 01852.
His funeral procession will form on Tuesday, April 11, 2023 at 9 a.m. at the funeral home, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. at St. Anthony’s Church, 893 Central Street, Lowell. The procession will then follow for burial at St. Mary Cemetery in Lowell.
