William G. “Vic” Birch passed away peacefully at his Medford home on Sunday, April 2nd. He was 75.
Vic was born in Florida and raised in Ohio. After high school and college, he served two tours in Vietnam, with the Navy and with the Marine Corps. After his honorable discharge, he embarked on a 35 year career with Local 7, Iron Workers. Always motivated by a "do the best you can" attitude towards work and life, Vic was made a foreman on the many major projects he worked on over the years, up and down the east coast.
A man of kind spirit and strong commitment to his beloved family and friends, Vic was devoted to his wife, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and friends. For 17 years after his retirement from the iron workers, he worked at Hillside Auto Repair on Broadway in Somerville. He always welcomed his customers with a good word and shared with them a piece or two of candy which helped brighten up a person’s day.
An avid golfer and a lover of poetry and music, Vic composed many songs which he sang and played on guitar to family and friends. After the loss of his beloved Marion in 2018, he visited and tended to her grave every day. There, his wisdom and kindness brought consolation to many fellow grievers on Mulberry Lawn.
The beloved husband of the late Marion M. (Bruno) Birch, Vic was a devoted father of Robert McCarron and his wife Eva, Marion Benoit, Beth Spinosa and her husband Frank, David Flett and his fiancée Lisa, Nicole Galbadis and her husband Steven, Francis Birch and his wife Trista, Brandi Feirick and the late William George Birch Jr. “Little Vic”. He was a loving grandfather to Doug, Robert, Joseph, Nicholas, Christopher, David, Frankie, Sophia, Michael, David III, Alea Beth, William III, Gabriella, Jason, Erik, John and the late Jesse, as well as a loving great-grandfather to Anthony, Robert Jr., Evalen, Kyleigh, Christopher Jr., David IV and the late Skylar.
