David A. Sharkey - 90, of Little Harbor, Wareham, formerly of Brockton, died peacefully on his 90th birthday on March 30, 2023 following a brief illness. David was the husband of the late Marie A. (Palmiero) Sharkey. Born in New York, he was the son of the late William E. and Frances P. (Allen) Sharkey.
Prior to retiring to Wareham, David was a resident of Brockton for 61 years. He was a graduate of Brockton High School, class of 1951 and Stonehill College, class of 1955. Following his graduation from Stonehill, David served in the US Army. He began his professional career with the Gillette Company in Cleveland, Ohio. After four years with Gillette, he and Marie returned to Massachusetts where he joined Honeywell Information Systems in Waltham, Massachusetts. He remained at Honeywell for 30 years, retiring in 1991 as an International Marketing executive.
Through the years, David was an active member of the community in a variety of ways including: U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary instructor, Stonehill College Alumni Councilman, adjunct instructor of International Marketing at Bryant University, a member of Brockton Civil Defense and Brockton Republican Committee, Wareham Zoning Board member, and the Wareham Deputy Harbor Master.
David’s hobbies included boating, photography, genealogy, non-fictional reading, history, time at the shooting range, handyman, walking, biking and tennis. He most especially enjoyed sailing from Harwichport with family and friends. He was an avid traveler for work and leisure to numerous locations including Australia, Asia, Central America and several Western European countries. In his later year he frequently spent time in Ogunquit ME.
David is survived by a daughter, Marda E. Collett and her husband Tom of Newtown Square, PA; a son Jonathan D. Sharkey and his wife Vanessa of West Bridgewater; four grandchildren Abigail E. Collett and her husband Mark Ozarowski, Peter T. Collett, Jared R. Sharkey and Gabriella V. Sharkey. He was the longtime companion of Christine Annese of Bedford, MA.
Visitation will be held in the Conley Funeral Home, 138 Belmont Street (Rte 123) Brockton, on Saturday, April 8 from 9-10:30 followed by a funeral service at 10:30am. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Brockton.
