Roger D. Hines 89, of Franklin, passed away peacefully, at his home Tuesday March 28, 2023, following an illness. He was the beloved husband of the late Shirley M. (Wheeler) Hines, who died in 2017.
Born December 22, 1933, in Clinton a son of the late George O. and Grace E. (Mentzer) Hines, he was a resident of Franklin since 1959.
He was raised in Bolton and was a graduate of Hudson High School. He then attended Stockbridge School of Agriculture at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst receiving his degree in in turf maintenance Class of 1953.
In 1956 he joined the United States Army, where he trained at Fort Knox, Kentucky. Roger was a member of CO.E-13th BN stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina until 1958.
Following his discharge from the service, he settled in Franklin and was the greenskeeper at Franklin County Club from 1959-1968. In 1968 he took a position with the Franklin Post Office until his retirement. He also served the Town of Franklin as a call fireman from 1968-1996.
Roger enjoyed camping, sitting around the campfire, woodworking, playing cards at the Franklin Senior Center, watching the Red Sox, square dancing, macramé, and loved his fur babies, especially Daisy.
He is survived by a daughter Vickie M. Boyd of Medway and was the brother of the late Evelyn Babcock, Harold Hines and Richard Hines.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a calling hour Saturday April 22nd, in the Charles F. Oteri and Son Franklin Funeral Home 33 Cottage St. from 10AM-12Noon.
A funeral service will follow at 12noon.
Burial will be at Union Street Cemetery.
