Obituary

Wendell Gene Pitts, 67, of Tifton passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 28, 2023. Funeral services will be held in the Chapel of Bowen- Donaldson Home for Funerals on Thursday, March 30, 2023, at 4:00 p.m. The family will receive friends in the Chapel of Bowen Donaldson at 3:00 p.m. until the hour of service. Dr. Greg Love will officiate, and a eulogy will be given by close friend, Jim Dunkle of Navarre, Florida. Burial will follow at Harding Methodist Church Cemetery where he & his wife were married in 1979.

Tommy Lamb, Donnie Crumley, David Lewis, Mike Delk, Glenn Coburn, David Jones, Jay Perrin and Chuck Perrin will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be the Unity Sunday school class of Crossview Baptist Church, Sonny & Patty Green-Johnson, Lisa Green-Chung, Neal Mathis, Nancy Glaze, Tommy and Suzanne Carter-Johnson, all of Tifton, Donald Swanson of Norman Park, Debbie Jarvis-Cowart of Bainbridge, Ruth Austin-Green of Navarre, Florida, Andy & Marcia Pierce of Redbank, Tennessee, and Jason Barr, Mike Kellogg & Jeff Robbins of Charleston, SC.

Mr. Pitts was born January 10, 1956, in Tift County to the late Paul & Winnie Pitts. He was also preceded in death by his brother-in-law and friend, Jack Perrin, and his father-in-law, Vaughn Cromer. Mr. Pitts was a humble, meek & quiet soul who made his way gently in this world. He was a dedicated Christian & a member of Crossview Baptist Church.

He graduated from Tift County High School in 1974 & from United Electronics Technical College in Tampa, FL with honors in 1979. His career in technical operations included working at Eglin Air Force Base in Fort Walton Beach, Florida & then in cable & Internet services in South Georgia for 38 years. He was dedicated to his work & took much pride that he was instrumental in turning on the first Internet service in South Georgia. After retirement as a technical operations manager, Mr. Pitts became a FedEx contractor with 20 delivery routes in Charleston, SC. His proudest achievement in life though was raising his 2 sons & seeing them both graduate with college degrees. He loved the outdoors & enjoyed landscaping & home projects, especially ones he could help his two sons with. He was a fan of the Atlanta Braves & the Georgia Bulldogs.

His favorite Bible verse was the most well-known verse in the Bible, John 3:16, which promises all who have believed have been saved and all who believe on Him will be saved. His favorite Christian song was, “Mary, did you know that your baby boy would save our sons and daughters.”

Mr. Pitts is survived by his loving wife, Phyllis Cromer Pitts, whom he was married for 44 years; his children, Derek Pitts and daughter-in-law, Brooke, of Cumming, Georgia, Kurt Pitts and daughter-in-law, Molly, of Valdosta, Georgia, and also the greatest joys of his life, his grandchildren, Caroline, Layton, Laina, and Kaia Pitts. He is also survived by his beloved sister, Marian Perrin of Waterloo, and his brother, Wayne and sister-in-law, Wendy of Boone, North Carolina, as well as nieces and nephews, and his brother and sister-in-law, Paul and Lynda Tompkins of Moultrie, Georgia, and mother-in-law, Rudine Cromer of Tifton.
