Alice M. Golen
Lifelong Tewksbury resident
TEWKSBURY: Alice M. (Farrell) Golen, age 87, a lifelong resident of Tewksbury and active member of Tewksbury Congregational Church, passed away at home surrounded by her family on Saturday, March 25, 2023.
She was the beloved wife of 54 years to the late Walter F. Golen, Jr., who passed away on February 5, 2011.
Born at home on Florence Avenue in Tewksbury, she was the daughter of the late James H. Farrell and the late Evelyn M. (Thibedeau) Farrell and sister to the late Barbara A. Ellsworth and James E. Farrell and his late wife Patricia.
Alice attended Tewksbury schools and graduated from Tewksbury High School in 1954. During her high school years, she was a member of the Girl’s Basketball team and was a cheerleader for the Tewksbury Redmen football team. It’s been said that Alice was known to cheer a little louder for her sweetheart “Wally”, who she would later marry in 1956.
The door of the Golen family home on Astle Street was always open and all were warmly welcomed to visit.
Alice built many endless loving and lasting relationships. Her presence will be greatly missed, and her legacy will live on all who were blessed to know her.
Alice enjoyed spending time at her Hampton Beach home and being surrounded by her many family members and friends. In addition, she loved crocheting, bird watching, challenging anyone to an “Around the World” basketball game, and taking photos of family and friends at events or any social gathering.
She was a member of the Tewksbury Congregational Church, where she served as treasurer of the Ladies Aid Committee and was recently recognized for her 60 years of membership and service to the church. Alice was a former member of the Tewksbury Historical Society.
Alice’s spirit will live on in her children, Richard J. Golen and his wife Vicki, of Tewksbury, Meredith A. Lumb, of Tewksbury, Robin J. Conley and her husband Len, of Milford, NH, Tracy M. Smith and her husband Paul, of Methuen, Wayne P. Golen and his partner Stacy, of Tewksbury and the late Robert J. “Rob” Golen and his former surviving wife, Debbie Nault: nine grandchildren, Billy Golen and his wife Andrea, Adam Golen and his wife Taylor, Evan Lumb and his wife Carmen, Mitch Conley, Chris Conley, Hope MacKenzie, James MacKenzie, Erin Smith, and Joey Sarraf: three great grandchildren, Kiley Golen, Allie Golen, and Carson Lumb.
Calling hours are Friday, March 31st, from 4-8 p.m. at the Farmer & Dee Funeral Home, 16 Lee St., Tewksbury. Her funeral procession will begin Saturday, April 1st, at 9 a.m. at the funeral home, followed by her Funeral Services at 10 a.m. at Tewksbury Congregational Church, 10 East St., Tewksbury. Services will conclude with interment at Tewksbury Cemetery, 172 East St., Tewksbury. In lieu of flowers.
