Obituary

PENACOOK---Donald Alan Wither was born on August 14, 1939 in Williamsport, PA. He met the love of his life Mary Valeria (Val) Bower and they married in 1958. He served as a Sargent in the US Army before working as a salesman for Benjamin & Moore Paints. They lived with their 4 children in Williamsport PA until moving to Contoocook, NH in 1972. Don left Benjamin & Moore when he purchased Carpenter and Wither, Inc in Concord, NH. Originally on Main Street, the paint, floor covering and wallpaper store moved to Storrs St and eventually to Hall St. Don owned and operated the store for over 25 years. Upon his retirement, he sold the store and they moved to Bonita Springs, FL. They shared their retirement with some special rescue dogs who brought them much joy. They relocated to Beverly Hills, FL where they remained until 2020 before returning to NH to be closer to family.

Over the years Don enjoyed many hobbies including fishing, woodworking, golf, and cooking. He was an active member in the Workworkers League in FL and often taught other members his love of turning wood. He made beautiful bowls, vases, ornaments, and pepper mills some of which he sold in a St Petersburg, FL gallery through his trade name Tamarisk Turnings. He loved their summers in Canada on the lake although relaxing was not something he was good at. He was always busy with one project or another. He enjoyed teaching his grandchildren how to make onion rings. His family will fondly remember all the times he spent cooking dinner while singing and dancing to Jimmy Buffet or Neil Diamond.

Don passed away at Concord Hospital Laconia on March 1, 2023 surrounded by his family. He leaves behind his loving wife, Mary (Val); his sister, Jean; his children, Robert, Barb, Kim, and Deborah along with 9 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. He will be deeply missed but we know he’s with the Spirit in the Sky. A private celebration of life will be held later for close family and friends. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the NH SPCA in his name.
