Maureen P. Mason, 80, a longtime Lowell and Chelmsford resident, passed away on Friday, March 17, 2023 after a brief illness at Lowell General Hospital with her loving family at her side.
A daughter of the late Maurice Patrick Mason and the late Mary (Harrison) Mason, she was born on February 27, 1943 in Lowell. She was raised and educated in Lowell and was a graduate of St. Peter’s Parochial School and Keith Hall. She furthered her education at Lowell State Teachers College and earned a Master’s Degree as a reading specialist from Salem State College.
The majority of Maureen’s life was devoted to the field of education. She spent 38 years in total as an educator, in the 1960’s she began teaching in Chelmsford before she spent the remainder of her career in Billerica. She eventually retired as the Director of Elementary Reading for the Town of Billerica School Department.
Maureen was a beloved sister, aunt and great aunt and will be sorely missed but never forgotten thanks in part to her abilities as a master quilt maker. In her lifetime she handmade over 500 quilts in countless shapes, sizes, colors and patterns. Each quilt was lovingly tailored to the individual and occasion. She also enjoyed gardening, loved dogs and was an avid reader. She was a member of a book club with her closest friends. She loved children and was the glue that kept her family together. She was like a second mother to her nieces and nephews, especially to her namesake niece, Maureen.
She is survived by her brother, Maurice P. Mason, Jr. Esq. and his wife, Maria Vejar-Mason of Dracut, her nieces and nephews, Maureen Jozokos and her husband, Jonathan, of Hudson, NH, Carolina Vejar-Mason of Lowell, Stephen J. Mason Jr. and his wife, Florencia, of Gilmanton, NH, Michael Mason and his wife, Magdalena, of Townsend, Daniel Mason and Robert Mason of Whitman and her grand nieces and grandnephews, Grant, Benjamin, Elly, Mary, Patrick, Maria Isabela and Maite Luna. She was also a sister of the late Richard T. Mason and the late Stephen J. Mason Esq.
On Friday, March 24, 2023 all are welcome to attend her calling hours from 4 until 8 p.m. at McDonough Funeral Home, 14 Highland Street, Lowell, 978-458-6816.
Her funeral procession will form on Saturday, March 25 at 9 a.m. at the funeral home. Her Funeral Mass will be offered at 10 a.m. Immaculate Conception Church, 144 East Merrimack Street, Lowell. Procession will follow for burial at St. Mary Cemetery in Tewksbury.
