Michael "Mul" Mulrenan, of Winchester, passed away on Saturday, March 11, 2023 after a courageous battle with stage 4 colon cancer. His family was by his side, surrounding him with tremendous love and admiration. Despite his pain, Michael was a warrior and true hero who stayed strong and faithful until the very end.
Michael was born and raised in Woburn, MA where he attended St. Charles School from Kindergarten through Seventh grade. From there, he attended Kennedy Middle School followed by Woburn High School, excelling in both academics and sports. A football injury in high school, as well as his inclination to help others, led Michael to pursue a career in physical therapy. In 1994, Michael graduated from Boston University with a Master’s Degree in PT. Soon after graduation, he proved to be a successful entrepreneur when he opened Mulrenan Physical Therapy, an outpatient clinic in Woburn, specializing in orthopedics and sports medicine. Eventually, Mulrenan PT became Proex PT and grew from one clinic to twenty clinics throughout New England. During the ProEx years as founder and CEO, Michael`s mission was to be a leader in clinical care, education, and research by providing a people focused experience. Ever the entrepreneur, Michael continued to develop his vision of caring for others in new directions, following the sale of ProEx.
The simplest pleasures in life brought great joy to Michael. Michael loved to cook. He loved cooking gourmet meals for his family and friends, but his favorite part was sitting around the table enjoying each other`s company. Michael loved to laugh. He loved spending time with his big, Irish family where laughter was contagious, but his was always the loudest. Michael loved the ocean and York Beach, ME. He loved sitting on his deck enjoying a glass of cabernet or a Manhattan in one hand and a cigar in the other. Michael loved helping others. He was a mentor to countless students and fellow Physical Therapists. He supported friends and family, alike, with his wisdom and love. And, in the last year of his life, he created a space for the children and teens of his parish to gather and strengthen their faith. The Mulrenan Youth Center at St. Eulalia will forever be a tribute to his generous character. But, Michael`s greatest joy and proudest accomplishment was being the most loving, mindful, and devoted husband and father.
Michael is survived by the love of his life and "true companion", Amy. His three beautiful children, Jake (20), Shaye (16), and Bree (14) will continue Michael`s legacy and honor him forever. Michael is predeceased by his father, John "Jackie" Mulrenan and his mother, Ruth Mulrenan. He is survived by 8 siblings, Kathleen and Jim Holzman of Derry, NH, Colleen and Dan Brandano of North Reading, John and Jane Mulrenan of Wilmington, Brian and Renee Mulrenan of Woburn, Tim and Donna Mulrenan of Needham, Maureen and Dusty Miller of Woburn, Ellen and Jon Haggerty of Reading, and Julie and John McDonough of Wilmington. He is survived by his father-in-law, Jack Schroeder, mother-in-law, Karen Schroeder (who passed away two days after Michael), brother-in-law, Scott Schroeder, and sister-in-law, Beth Schroeder. He is survived by many nieces and nephews, cousins, and aunts, as well as three great nieces and one great nephew.
