Ventura - With profound sadness we share that George Thomas Roberts, beloved dad, husband, brother and friend, has passed away at age 79 following a brief illness.
George was born in New York City, in 1943, to George Thomas Tynch and Vicki Zimmer. His mother’s love of music and performing meant that George was primarily raised in the Iowa home of his beloved aunt, Lois LaVia.
George eventually made his way to Oregon, where he graduated from North Salem High School and attended Oregon State University. Shortly thereafter, he began his long and rewarding career as a retail manager for the Safeway/Vons corporation.
George met and married his first wife, Billie, in 1980. They enjoyed their life together until Billie’s death in 2001. While participating in a bereavement support group, George met Janice Standing, and the two became great friends. They were married in March 2003, and lived happily until Janice’s death in 2021. Throughout their 18 years together, Jan and George both retired, traveled the world, and dedicated their time to Marriage Encounter, provided bereavement support through their parish, Our Lady of the Assumption, Shop Ahoy (bring groceries to those in need) and volunteering at Ventura County Medical Center. Both Jan and George were Eucharist ministers.
Both George and Janice faced the end of life with candor, commitment and immeasurable love.
George leaves behind daughter Katharine Hullinger of Ventura, CA, Michael Standing (Dianne), of Forest Grove, OR, and son Mark Standing of Grant's Pass, OR.; he leaves behind beloved grandchildren, Matt and Saffron, James and Stephanie, his brother Jeff (Seiko) of Anacortes, WA., along with many cousins with whom he remained close.
Mass will be held for George at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church on Monday April 24, 2023 at 11:00am. Internment of ashes afterward will be private. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the ALS Association.
