The Honorable Robert L. Maloney passed away peacefully in Florida on Saturday February 25th. He was 85. Born and raised in Medford, Bob was the son of the late Gordon J. and Beatrice Mary (Connell) Maloney.
Bob worked for many years as an administrator for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in the Office of the Auditor. A life member of the Medford Lodge of Elks, #915, he was Past Exalted Ruler. Bob also served as past Lieutenant Governor of Kiwanis International and was also a member of the Irish American Club. For 28 years Bob served the people of Medford as a City Councilor. His tenure began during the 1970’s and ended in 2001. His years of service were marked by a genuine desire to do his best for the people and to never give up fighting for a just cause. Always accessible, Bob had a special penchant for standing up for the disadvantaged.
Throughout his years on the council he led many committees and also was selected by his peers to serve as Deputy Mayor and as President of the Council.
Devoted to his family, Bob and his late wife Johannah had a wonderful life together. In retirement, Bob enjoyed time in Florida and loved to hear from old friends and looked forward to seeing his grandchildren.
The beloved husband of the late Johannah M. “JoAnn” (Cleary) Maloney, Bob was a devoted father to Gordon J. Maloney and his wife Christine of Stoneham, Robert L. Maloney Jr. and his wife Kelley of Medford, and Shawn P. Maloney and his wife Toni of Medford. He was a loving grandfather to Connor, Molly, Patrick, Shawn, and Angelica. He was a devoted to his late brothers: Joseph, John, Billy, and Tommy Maloney.
A funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday, March 6th at 10 AM in the Immaculate Conception Church, 600 Pleasant Street, Malden. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Burial will be private. Visiting hours are kindly omitted.
