Obituary

Owens, Cornelia "Connie" 84, an award-winning first-grade teacher at Broadmeadow Elementary School in Needham for 35 years, died Sunday, Feb. 26, 2023.

She was born in Boston in 1938 to Cornelius Owens, a Boston Globe political columnist, and Gertrude Mahoney. Con was the oldest of six children, so she often shared her mother's child-rearing duties. As a result, she was well-trained in childcare even before attending Boston State to become a teacher. She would go on to an illustrious career at Broadmeadow, ultimately winning an award from the Goldin Foundation for Excellence in Education in 1997. She retired two years later.

Con was into theater, travel, book groups and caring for others. She cared for her aging father for many years in West Roxbury, then moved in with her daughter in Burlington, where she played a priceless role as Nana to her grandsons for her final 15 years.

She will be immensely missed by her daughter Lu Owens, son-in-law Robert Fahey and grandsons Max and Rhys Fahey, brother David Owens and his wife Lise Zeig, brother James Owens, sister Karen Owens Linehan, sister-in-law Mary Owens. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held at the George F. Doherty & Sons Funeral Home, 1305 Highland Ave. Needham, on Thursday, March 9, from 4-7pm. Relatives and friends kindly invited. In lieu of flowers, send donations to: Cure PSP, 1216 Broadway, Second Floor, New York, NY 10001.
