Mary W. (Wood) McCarthy, 76, of Westport, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 28, 2023 with her family by her side after a long illness. She was the wife of Michael C. McCarthy, Jr.
Born in Fall River, daughter of the late Milton B. and Louise M. (Kent) Wood, she was a lifelong resident of Westport. She was an Honor Society graduate of Westport High School, Class of 1964. Prior to retirement, Mary was an office manager/bookkeeper at several dental and medical offices in the area. During that time Mary established many relationships that spanned her entire lifetime. After retirement, she focused on helping others in need. Her biggest accomplishment, with her friends and fellow church members, was the establishment of a thriving Thrift Shop at Westport United Congregational Church. This aided in the support of the church for over 8 years. Mary also assisted in the organization of many church events such as suppers, bazaars, book sales, etc.
She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and former Star Point Ruth, the treasurer of the Westport United Congregational Church Merrymakers, Westport Womans Club, where she was a former president, deacon of Westport United Congregational Church, Girl Scout Leader at state level and worked the Westport town voting poles. Mary enjoyed knitting, crocheting, crafting, going out with her Girl Friends and hosting her annual "4th of July Cookout." Most of all, she loved spending time with her family, especially babysitting her grandchildren and great grandchild.
Mary cared deeply for her family, friends and anyone in need. She did this not out of obligation, but because of who she was. She was always the first to offer help. The family and community will suffer a huge loss by the passing of Mary, who touched so many and contributed so much, to everything she was involved in.
Including her husband, she is survived by 2 daughters: Kathleen A. McCarthy and her partner Edward Langlais and Karen L. Medeiros and her husband Randal; a son: Michael C. McCarthy III and his partner Suzanne Tibbetts; 2 sisters: Joanne W. Allen and her husband Mark and Marcia W. Liggin and her husband Thomas; a brother: Milton "Butch" Stafford; 3 grandchildren: Megan L. Stoots, Samantha P. McCarthy and Taylor G. McCarthy; a great grandchild: Jordan J. Stoots; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
She was grandmother of the late Ryan J. Stoots.
