Christine May (Travers) Walecka, 68, of Bridgewater, formerly of New Bedford died Monday February 20, 2023 surrounded by her family after a courageous battle with cancer. She was the wife of Joseph Hugh Walecka since 1984.
Born in New Bedford, the daughter of the late Gilbert E. and Alyce M. (Banks) Travers, she lived in New Bedford most of her life but enjoyed her retirement with her beloved grandchildren in Bridgewater.
Christine was previously employed at Bank of Boston and A. Walecka & Son.
She was a devoted parishioner of Saint Lawrence Parish for 66 years. She cherished her time being a part of several organizations over the years, including the Ladies Guild, the Parish Council, and the Finance Committee.
Chris enjoyed spending time with her two daughters and grandchildren, talking on the phone and casino trips with her sisters, musical theatre, and the company of her dog Ernie.
Survivors include her husband, Joseph; two daughters, Ashley Walecka and her fiancé Calvin Ma of Bridgewater, and Sarah Blackmore and her husband Thomas of Smithfield, RI; two sisters, Robin Bouchard, and Nancy Bouchard and her husband Normand, all of New Bedford; and her two grandchildren, Nathan and Hailey Ma; as well as her sister-in-law, Debra Travers; three nieces and a nephew, and two great-nieces.
She was predeceased by her brother, Michael Travers.
Her funeral will be held on Friday February 24th at 9 AM from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, followed by her Funeral Mass at St. Lawrence Church at 10 AM. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Thursday February 23rd from 4-7 PM.
