97 Beloved Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother, Friend

Spring Hill FL – Mary Sawyer, 97 passed away peacefully at home with her son at her side on February 16, 2023.

She was born in Boston Massachusetts, on August 15, 1925, the daughter of Domenic Canale and Lena (Girardi) Garofolini both of Italy and was raised by her mother and Louis Garofolini, her stepfather in East Boston, Massachusetts.

Mary was a graduate of East Boston High School. In 1945 she met her future husband John J Sawyer at a USO dance while he was serving in the Army during World War II. After a short period in Ohio and Everett Massachusetts, Mary and her husband moved to Tewksbury Massachusetts where they resided for 45 years.

Mary owned and operated Mary’s Beauty Salon, on Main St., Tewksbury for over 30 years. Mary was always an outgoing spirited person, willing to join, sign up and step up for her community. While living in Tewksbury, She started one of the first cub scout packs in 1963 and was a devoted volunteer to Tewksbury Little League for many years.

In 2000 Mary and her husband John moved to Spring Hill Florida. While residing in Spring Hill, Mary actively contributed to the Timber Pines community. She made many friends there and was president of the travel club. In her later years she was sole coordinator of the mahjong room at the community lodge. Mary loved to travel and visited over 11 countries in Europe, as well as Egypt, and China.

Mary was devoted to her family and the warm memories of her enthusiasm and generosity toward her family will be remembered forever.

Mary was predeceased by; her sister Josephine Canale, her brother Frank Canale, her husband of 50 years John J Sawyer, her sons Timothy Sawyer and Mark J. Sawyer. Mary leaves behind; her two sons, Kevin W. Sawyer of Spring Hill Florida, Scott M. Sawyer, and his spouse Julie of Deerfield Massachusetts, several grandchildren including Jaemi (Sawyer) Carkin, Adam Sawyer, Erika Sawyer, Glen Sawyer, Mark Sawyer, Jr., Michael Sawyer, Kim Effert, Kerri Pyne, and six great grandchildren.

Mary will be missed by friends and family, and she will forever live in our hearts.

On Saturday, March 4, 2023 all are welcome to attend her calling hours from 10:00 am to 11:30 am at the Tewksbury Funeral Home, 1 Dewey St., Tewksbury 978-851-2061.

Her funeral service will take place in the funeral home at 11:30 a.m. Burial to take place thereafter at St. Mary’s Cemetery located at 90 River Rd., Tewksbury, MA.
