Obituary

Anna (Collins,Plunkett) Irving, a 60 year resident of South Boston passed away peacefully while living at Marion Manor on Feb. 12, 2023. Anna was 90 yrs. old. She was born on June 20, 1932 in Roxbury, MA. She was the daughter of the late Thomas and Ann Plunkett of Roxbury, MA. Survived by her children Kathleen (Irving) Rakowski of CT, Diana Collins of NY and Timothy Collins of NY. Predeceased by her daughters Anna / Dolly (Collins) Balliro and Carolyn (Irving) Dunphy and her granddaughter Angela Balliro. She was the loving Grandmother to Matthew, Kevin and Dillon Rakowski of CT and Kaitlyn Irving of South Boston. Great grandmother to Haley and Lauren Balliro.
Anna was born at home on June 20, 1932, on Columbus Ave. in Roxbury. She attended the Commins School on Mission Hill, the High School of Practical Arts, Massachusetts College of Art, and Boston Clerical School. She became a widow at age twenty-five and felt it necessary to occupy her time with learning. She attended school until age 62. She attended the New England Institute of Banking and studied five computer languages as well as psychology, auditing, and law. She had 3 children before she was widowed. When she was about 32 she remarried and had 2 more children. She was widowed again 20 years later. She retired after working in several Boston banks for more than thirty years. At one point she was a supervisor at Shawmut Bank in downtown Boston. She then went on to do several volunteer assignments, including treasurer of her Alumni Association, president of the Friends of the South Boston Public Library, and tour guide at Fort of Independence on Castle Island.
Anna was always a hard working woman and she raised 5 children and was proud to have owned her own home. She enjoyed listening to music at home and she loved going to the theater to see a musical. She went to every museum in Boston with both her children and her grandchildren. She was a pet lover, she always had a dog or a cat at home. She always enjoyed a nice cup of tea, listening to her all time favorite “Johnny Cash” and catching an episode of her favorite show “NCIS”.
She will be missed dearly by all who knew and loved her.
Visiting hours will be held at The Casper Funeral Home, 187 Dorchester Street, South Boston on Thursday Feb 23 from 4:00-7:00p.m. Followed by a Funeral Mass in Gate of Heaven Church, South Boston Friday at 10:00a.m. Interment St. Joseph Cemetery, W. Roxbury.
