Mary Lorraine Boyd age 92 + of Ventura, CA passed away on Tuesday, February 7th, 2023 in Ventura, CA.
Lorraine was born in a beautiful old house in Arroyo Grande to John and Mary Brazil on February 22, 1930. She went to high school at San Luis High and finished her education later in life, graduating from Buena High School in Ventura with her son Steve in 1971.
She had many activities and hobbies. Hand painted cards for birthdays and loaves of banana bread and jars of marmalade were freely given.
Her annual Christmas Coffee open houses were legendary.
For her 65th birthday, she gave herself permission to start marathons. And she was off to see the world. Twice to Alaska, twice to Los Angeles. And then off to Ireland for yet another run, after that to Italy. In between were hours of walking, getting ready for the next race. Also, many half-marathons, 10 Ks, 5K, etc. One of her favorite runs was the Susan G. Komen for Breast Cancer 3 day walk along the beach. And please don’t forget the Senior Olympics.
She was also a fifty-year plus member of Native Daughters of the Golden West. P.P.S-Portuguese Pentecost Society, PFSA, and UPPEC. She gave many hours to helping with church activities, feeding the homeless, driving people to appts., grocery stores, any place where she could help. She was a founding member of Our Lady of the Assumption Church, where she was known as “The Hat Lady” greeter. Always ready with a smile and warm greeting.
You may have seen her at the Ventura County Fair in the summer. Not only did she enter some of her award-winning baked goods and woven pieces, she also served as a security person for commercial buildings.
With the many activities that she had, probably Camp Fire Girls was one of her favorites. She was director of many summer and winter camps for the girls, down by the beach and up in Frasier Park.
As a docent at the Olivas Adobe, she portrayed a historical weaver and demonstrated her weaving skills. Weaving was a passion of hers. At one time, she worked on a room size loom, which she took great pride in. She had many traveling looms, which she would happily take to whomever she could and teach them how to weave.
Lorraine is survived by her daughter Judie Jensen of Templeton, CA, a son Steven Boyd (Shelly) from Spokane, WA, a son Tom Boyd (Deena) from Pueblo, CO, a daughter Debra Huber from Whitefish, MT, and a nephew David O’Connor (Sandy) from Lake Havasu City, AZ.
