Eleanor Newell Allen, 91, of Fitzgerald, Georgia, died Thursday, February 9, 2023, at Shady Pines Estate, in Abbeville, Georgia.
Funeral services will be held 3 PM, Sunday, February 12, 2023, at The Paulk Funeral Home Chapel in Fitzgerald, with her nephew, Dr. Jeff Myers officiating. Interment will follow in the Siloam Cemetery in Wilcox County, Georgia, with Dr. Eugene Jackson offering a prayer and a song. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.
Mrs. Allen was born January 28, 1932, in Abbeville, Georgia, to the late L. F. & Rebecca Statham Newell. She graduated from Rochelle High School in 1950. She was a homemaker and worked as a sales clerk for Belk-Hudson and Friedlanders Department Stores. Mrs. Allen was a correspondent for the Wilcox Chronicle and the Herald Leader newspapers. She was a former member of Fitzgerald Lioness, Optimist Club, UDC and was a Young Farmers Wife. She loved flowers and working in her flower beds. She will be remembered for her cooking, especially her cakes and her famous dressing. She enjoyed family gatherings and was known to share her cooking with neighbors and friends. Many of her nieces and nephews fondly recall the fish-frys she and Mr. Allen would host. Talking on the phone and attending gospel sings were favorite past times of hers. Mrs. Allen loved the Lord and was a member of Arbor Baptist Church.
She is survived by her daughters: Martena Cauthen & Tommy of Abbeville, Debra Davis & Kenny and Janie Pickard & Sam Garland, all of Fitzgerald; grandchildren: Kendra & Kevin Day, Brant & Heather Pickard, Dr. T.W. Cauthen, III, Kenny Ray & Crystal Davis, Lindsey & Joshua Brown, Allen Davis, Brittney & Jesse Laudino and Martin & Kayla Cauthen; great-grandchildren: Kenlea Davis Day, Jillian Davis, Brady Davis, Maddie Grace Pickard, Jab Brown, Chayse Allen Brown, Blake Davis, Andey Mae Brown, Parker Cauthen, Suthern Jaxx Wise Davis, Pierce Cauthen, and one on the way, Arabella Laudino; a brother, Marion Newell of Abbeville; and six sisters: Lorell Wheeler of Abbeville, Vivian Yawn of Tifton, Gloria Spires of Albany, Patricia Berry of New Orleans, Louisiana, Alicia Everett of Vienna, and Mary Ruth Davis of Americus. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Martin W. Allen; two brothers: Lewis Newell and Turner Newell; and a sister, Nettie Sharkshnas.
