On February 8th, David "Irish" Byrnes passed away peacefully at home wrapped in a blanket of his family's love. Together David and his beloved wife of very nearly 60 years, Maria (Francis), grew a beautiful family through their love, faith, kindness, loyalty, and hard work. Julia Brady (Mendon, MA), Rita Putnam (Ipswich, MA), and Mary Moriarty (Laconia, NH), David and Maria's daughters, were the twinkle in their Dad's Irish eyes. David was also fortunate to share special bonds with Philip Putnam, John Moriarty, as well as his wonderful neighbors and many friends.
Born in Limerick, Ireland, David immigrated to America at the age of 9. Settling in Mission Hill in Boston, David developed into a proud American while always maintaining a deep connection to his Irish heritage. David and Maria left the city in the early years of their marriage and made Franklin their permanent home.
David, "Grandpa", adored his grandchildren, Megan Brady, Jessica Putnam, Lauren (Brady) Wencis, Rebecca Putnam, and Sean Putnam. Each of them expanded his heart, brought him joy, and made him proud.
David was loved by many nieces and nephews and is survived by siblings Mary Murray, Michael Byrnes, and John Byrnes. He was predeceased by his mother Julia (Dowling) Byrnes and father John and his wife, Mary, and brother, Christopher Byrnes.
Born with an impeccable and unmatched work ethic, David shared this talent with the Boston Housing Authority for 39 years and his many successful entrepreneurial pursuits.
David built relationships with everyone he encountered and took genuine joy in making things and people’s lives better. His warm smile and eyes, happy attitude, and genuine nature, allowed him to bridge differences and make authentic connections. A giant of a man with a heart of gold, David would give the shirt off his back to help another human being in need.
David was humbled to serve for many years as an usher for Saint Mary's parish in Franklin. Additionally, Irish enjoyed being a longstanding member of the Franklin Elks Lodge.
Born with the gift of a beautiful singing voice, David, particularly enjoyed sharing “Oh Danny Boy”, “Loch Lomond”, and “When Irish Eyes are Smiling”. When David lifted his voice, always as a soloist, hearts were warmed and comforted and yes, tears were often shed.
