Leo A. Roderick, 91, of New Bedford died February 7, 2023 at Hathaway Manor.
He was the husband of the late Ida M. (Watkins) Roderick.
Born on Nantucket, son of the late Gordon and Anne (Silva) Roderick, he lived in New Bedford most of his life.
Leo was formerly employed as a merchant mariner with Standard Oil of New Jersey and Exxon Mobil for many years until his retirement. He attended Massachusetts Barbering School in Boston. During his retirement he became an accomplished artist under the guidance of the late Louis Sylvia. He enjoyed scrimshaw, ceramics and making Nantucket baskets.
He was a parishioner of Our Lady of Purgatory Church.
He was a member of Our Lady of Purgatory Veterans Association and the Exxon/Mobil Annuitant Club.
He served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army during the Korean War in Germany.
He was an avid bowler. He bowled in many leagues at Wonder Bowl in New Bedford, Holiday Lanes in Westport and Somerset.
Survivors include his son, Barry Roderick and his wife Susan of New Bedford; 5 grandchildren, Jason Oliveira, Brian Roderick, Matthew Roderick, Christopher Adamides and Andrea Greene; many great-grandchildren; 2 nieces, Robbie Watkins and Andrea Barros and 2 nephews, Daryn Roderick and Jeffrey Pina.
He was the brother of the late Alves "Abby" Roderick, Beatrice Souza and Olivia Pina.
His visiting hours will be held on Sunday, February 12th from 1-4 PM in the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. His Funeral Service will be held on Monday, February 13th at 10 AM in the funeral home followed by burial in South Dartmouth Cemetery.
