LOWELL Maria Lourdes (Dias) Bettencourt, 77, of Lowell, passed away Monday, February 6, 2023, at her home with her daughter, Fatima, and granddaughter, Ashley, by her side. She was the wife of the late Angelo Brasil Bettencourt who passed away on February 3, 2009. They were married for forty one years.
Born November 30, 1945, in Sao Jorge, Azores, Portugal, she was the daughter of the late Ana Josefa Bettencourt and the late Agostinho Dias. Maria grew up and was educated in Sao Jorge, making her home there until 1974, when she and Angelo moved to France with their eldest daughter. In 1979, Maria, Angelo, and her two daughters came to the United States, settling in Lowell, where she made her home until her death.
Maria was a communicant of Saint Anthony’s Church and a member of the Holy Ghost Society. Prior to her stroke in 2008, Maria loved sewing, going for long walks, petting dogs, and cooking delicious Portuguese meals. She loved spending time with her eldest grandchildren, making them pancakes on Sunday mornings. Maria especially adored hosting her annual Holy Ghost dinners with family and friends.
Maria worked at Wang Laboratories as a solderer, a packer at Prince Macaroni, which later changed to Borden, Inc. and as a janitor for RFMA Cleaning Services until her retirement in 2007.
Her survivors include her eldest daughter, Fatima Pimentel, who was Maria’s sole caregiver for over fourteen years, and her husband, Rafael, and their children, Michael and Ashley Pimentel of Lowell; her daughter, Angela Casaubon and her husband, Chris, and their children, Izak and Ava Casaubon of Lowell; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was welcomed into heaven by her siblings, the late Jose Martins Bettencourt Dias, and the late Antonio Bettencourt Dias.
The family would like to especially thank the team at Westford Family Medicine for all the care they provided for the past fourteen years, as well as her hospice nurses from Tufts Medicine Care at Home for their care at the end of her life.
