Jose N. Lopes, 65, a longtime Lowell resident, passed away peacefully with his family by his side after a brief illness on Saturday, February 4, 2023 at Lowell General Hospital.
Born February 26, 1957 in Flores, Azores, Portugal, he was a son of the late Francisco Lopes and the late Guilhermina (Valencio) Lopes. He grew up and was educated in Flores. As a young man, he was a gifted soccer player and played on a traveling squad that toured the Azores. He also worked for several years in the Azores as a welder. He came to the United States in 1979, settling in Lowell’s Back Central Street Neighborhood.
His first job in America was with Wang Laboratories and then with Joan Fabrics. Most recently he was employed as a property manager locally managing various properties.
Jose was a longtime communicant of St. Anthony Church and was a member of the Portuguese American Civic League “The Reds Club”. He was a lifelong soccer fan and an ardent supporter of S.L. Benfica.
He is survived by his son, Samuel Lopes of Lowell, his former wife and friend, Fernanda Lopes of Lowell, his brothers and sisters, Conceicao Armas of Flores, Azores, Portugal, Julio Lopes of Lowell, Francisco Lopes of Lowell, Jose Espirito Santo Lopes of Lowell, Lucia Borges of Flores, Azores, Portugal, Fernando Lopes of Flores, Azores, Portugal, Maria Jose Colon of Lowell, Jose Maria Lopes of Lowell, Telma Lopes of Lowell, Maria Lourdes Lopes of Lowell, Sandra Lopes of Flores, Azores, Portugal, Liberio Lopes of New Bedford, seven nieces and ten nephews, eight grand nieces and eight grand nephews, including his God daughter Filomena Lopes of Lowell, his good friends Waldete Parreiras of Lowell and Fernanda Santos of Boston.
He was also predeceased by his sons the late Alexandre and Marco Lopes and Daniel Lopes and he was predeceased by 8 siblings including the late Manuela Lopes and Fatima Lopes.

On Friday morning, his funeral will begin at 9 a.m. at the MCDONOUGH FUNERAL HOME, 14 Highland Street, Lowell - 978-458-6816. His Funeral Mass will be offered at SAINT ANTHONY CHURCH, 893 Central Street, Lowell at 10 a.m..
Procession will follow for burial at St. Joseph Cemetery in Chelmsford.
