Joanne Matthews, of Medford, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully at 1:01 p.m. on Wednesday, February 1st at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts after a courageous battle with cancer. She was 68 years old.
Born in Boston, Massachusetts, on March 23rd, 1954, Joanne spent her formative years there before moving to Medford. Joanne had a passion for life and loved to spend quality time with her family. She enjoyed traveling the world, including destinations such as Hawaii, Africa, Portugal, Italy, Bermuda, Virgin Islands, Aruba, Jamaica, Bahamas, Morocco, and many other places, some of which were visited by cruise ship. Joanne engaged in many activities and had several hobbies, a favorite of which was singing onstage with her brother, Charles, with whom she dreamed of one day becoming a successful duet. An avid Karaoke fan, Joanne often competed in, and won several Karaoke contests. She also loved to dance, play cards, and immersed herself in art, fashion, and photography.
Joanne was preceded in death by her mother, Jennie Brown and father, Albert Brown; sisters, Dorothy (Kouchie) Harris, Christine Arrington, Linda Mendes, Diane Edge, and Delores Brown. She is survived by her husband, John Matthews of Medford; daughters, Katrina Washington and her husband, Julius Washington; Tarsha Adorno; Joanna Matthews-Baker and her husband, Jevon Baker; her son, John Matthews III; sisters, Ruth (Bunny) Barboza, and Corrine Brown; brothers, Charles (Kenny) Brown, and Calvin Brown; grandchildren, Laraesha, Dorian, Christian, Sabrina, Destinee, Aaliyah, Julius, John, Jayce, Aria, Kai; and great-grandchild, Malachi, as well as many family members and friends.
Visiting hours: Tuesday, February 7th 2023, 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Beals-Geake-Magliozzi Funeral Home, 29 Governors Avenue, Medford, MA 02155. (Masks are preferred) A celebration of Joanne’s life will be held on Wednesday, February 8th, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. at the BealsGeake-Magliozzi Funeral Home. Interment will take place at Oak Grove Cemetery, 230 Playstead Rd, Medford, MA 02155.
Repast will be held at: American Legion Post 45 321 Winthrop Street, Medford, MA 02155.
