Obituary

DARTMOUTH — Leonard Avery Oliver, age 87 years, of Dartmouth, died Monday, May 29, 2006, at Brandon woods of Dartmouth. He was the husband of Nancy (Lawrence) Oliver.
Born in New Bedford, he was the son of the late George F. and Clara (Parker) Oliver and was a lifelong area resident. His employment background included production control at Continental Screw Co., methods engineer at Morse Cutting Tools and sales associate for Sears. He was also a licensed real estate broker.
An Army veteran of World War II, he served as a corporal in the US Army, 221st Field Artillery, Americal Division, and served in the South Pacific for 44 months, participating in battles in Guadalcanal, Bougonville, Leite and the southern Phillipines.
Mr. Oliver was a Past Worthy Patron of New Bedford Chapter #49 Order of Eastern Star, a member of Star in the East-Paskamansett Lodge of Masons, the Americal Division Veterans Association, VFW Post #1531 and the Goodyear Seniors. For many years, Mr. Oliver was a coach for Little League basketball with the Dartmouth Youth Athletic Association and a member of the Dartmouth Schools Music Association.
In addition to his wife he is survived by two sons, Ralph Oliver of Plymouth, N.H., and Robert Oliver of Queensland, Australia; his step-daughters, Carol Francis of Brooksville, Fla., and Kathleen Hatch of Georgetown, Ma.; his stepson, Robert Cooper of Dartmouth, Ma.; 10 grandchildren; 2 great-granddaughters; 1 great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late George F. Oliver Jr.
His funeral will take place on Friday at 10 A.M. in the Smith Mills Christian Congregational Church with burial in Acushnet Cemetery.
