CHICOPEE – Samuel S. “Sam” Carabetta, 79, of the Fairview section of Chicopee, was Called Safely Home on Thursday, January 19, 2023. He passed into Eternal Life at home in Chicopee surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family. He was born in Springfield on October 4, 1943, a beloved son of the late Rocco M. and Leona (Messier) Carabetta. He was raised and educated in Springfield and had lived in East Longmeadow before returning to Springfield. He was employed as a Tractor Trailer Driver for many years, retiring in 2005 from Overnite Transportation. He was a communicant of Saint Anne Church in Chicopee and a longtime Mason with the Mount Moriah Lodge A.F. & A.M. in Westfield. During his leisure time, he enjoyed fishing, working on puzzles and wood working. He was an avid NASCAR fan and enjoyed cheering on his New York Yankees and New York Giants. Above all, he loved spending time with his family and his many friends. He leaves his beloved wife and best friend of 43 years, Karen M. “Kays” (Schroeder) Carabetta. He also leaves his loving son, Donald D. Tillack and his wife, Gabrielle, of Fayetteville, NC; his beloved nephews whom he treated as his sons, Gary L. Showers, Jr. and his wife, Alison, and Christopher A. McLeod and his husband, James, all of Chicopee; his four cherished grandchildren, Kayla, Kyle, Caley and Madelyn; his two dear brothers, Rocco Carabetta, Jr. of East Longmeadow and Stephen Carabetta and his wife, Beth, of Dobson, NC; his dear sister, Sandra Washburn-Kearns and her husband, Harry Kearns of Davidson, NC; his dear sister in law, Cheryl Showers of Chicopee; and his many dear cousins, friends and extended family members. He will also be missed by his beloved canine and feline companions, his dog Maggie and his cat, Tony. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his dear sister in law, Linda Carabetta who was Called Home on March 5, 2021; his father in law and beloved mother in law, William R. Emerick who was Called Home on June 3, 1988 and Anna Maria “Sissy” (O’Donahue) Emerick who was Called Home on January 29, 2011. His relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, February 3, 2023 at 11 a.m. at Saint Anne Church, 30 College Street, Chicopee, MA 01020, (please meet directly at the Church). His Burial will be private. There are no visiting hours. His funeral arrangements are entrusted to the St. Pierre-Phaneuf Fairview Chapels, (413-533-3307), 506 Britton Street, Chicopee, MA 01020.
